Potassium is an element discovered in 1807. It is called Potassium after the ash lye - from burnt wood - potash. It is the original form of natural potassium fertilization. It was also the first element discovered by electrolysis. The name kalium is derived from the Arabic alkali - القلوي (al-qaly). In medicine, along with sodium, Potassium is responsible for water balance in the body. In plants it is equally essential for water balance as well as regulating energy production. Thus plants would be able to defend themselves against diseases and pests.

Why is potassium important?

We all know what Photosynthesis is. However, do we know that it is a process in which the need for potassium is essential in order to develop sugars in plants and provide the energy needed for their development. Along with nitrogen and phosphorus, potassium is one of the essential macronutrients for plants.

Potassium not only increases production but also improves crop quality. It improves the nutritional value of seeds, tubers and fruits by increasing the protein and oil content of seeds, starch, vitamin C and sugar in fruits. Potassium also improves the flavour and colour of the fruit and increases its size. In addition, it increases the resistance to various injuries suffered during storage and transport, thereby extending shelf life - a detail often overlooked and/or neglected by farmers growing crops for industry and transporting them over longer distances.

Atlantica Agricola have developed the product Kelik specifically designed to provide extra potassium to plants. Its efficacy is due to its main ingredient – pure potassium. It does not contain phosphorus, nitrogen or sulphur, which prevents reactions with plant macronutrients. Potassium is absorbed directly by the plant, from the root system, especially under high osmotic pressure. Kelik is applied to soils with pH above 3.
